Modern Foreign Language
MFL is a core subject at Battle Abbey School with dedicated subject specialists delivering French and Spanish classes to pupils in all Key Stages.
Learning a foreign language not only enhances listening skills and memory, but it also improves the knowledge of one’s own language. It is an academic challenge to which our pupils rise every year, achieving good results across the board. The ambitious curriculum enables all students to explore different cultures and promotes effective communication in their chosen language. Pupils who continue with French or Spanish at A Level enjoy access to many excellent combination courses at university and several former pupils have studied or are currently enrolled at Bristol, Durham, Kings College London, Manchester, Reading and Royal Holloway.
Mother tongue speakers of Mandarin, Cantonese, German and Italian can receive preparation classes for the GCSE and A Level exam if they wish to do so. In the past we have also facilitated Russian, Turkish, Greek and Arabic examinations – we live in a multilingual world and this is reflected in our thriving international school community.
The MFL Department plays an important role in the extra-curricular life of the school. Each year we offer popular language trips to Barcelona, Paris and Madrid. We also encourage pen pal exchanges and invite French and Spanish theatre companies to our school.
